EV chargers at work:
perk, power move or proper business investment?

Workplace EV chargers are no longer just a nice extra for staff. They can support your employees, strengthen your sustainability goals, help prepare your fleet for the future and turn your car park into a smarter part of your business energy strategy. So, are they a perk, a power move or a proper investment? The answer might be all three.

Workplace EV chargers used to feel like a nice little bonus. The kind of thing that made a business look modern, sustainable and a bit ahead of the curve. But now? They are quickly becoming much more than a shiny staff perk in the car park.

As more drivers switch to electric and more businesses look at cleaner, smarter ways to run their fleets, workplace charging is becoming part of a bigger conversation. It is not just about giving employees somewhere to plug in. It is about future proofing your site, supporting electric vehicles, reducing reliance on public charging and making your business more ready for what comes next.

Electric vehicles are continuing to grow in the UK. In April 2026, battery electric vehicle registrations reached 39,084, up 59.1% compared with April 2025, giving BEVs a 26.2% market share for the month. That shows the direction of travel is not exactly subtle. Electric vehicles are not waiting politely in the future anymore. They are already in the car park.

More Than Just a Staff Perk

Let’s be honest, workplace EV charging does make a business look good.

For employees who already drive electric, having access to charging at work can make daily life easier. Instead of planning around public chargers or relying only on home charging, staff can top up while they are already parked at work. No extra journey. No awkward detour. No sitting in a supermarket car park pretending the weekly shop takes 50 minutes.

It can also help make a business more attractive to future employees. As electric company cars, salary sacrifice schemes and personal EV ownership become more common, charging at work could become one of those benefits people quietly expect. A bit like decent Wi-Fi, good coffee and a printer that does not emotionally collapse every Tuesday.

But calling workplace charging just a perk is probably underselling it.

A Power Move for Your Brand

Customers, suppliers and visitors notice when a business invests in better infrastructure. EV chargers outside a workplace send a simple message: this company is thinking ahead.

That can matter more than people realise. Sustainability is no longer just something businesses mention in a forgotten paragraph on the “About Us” page. It can affect brand reputation, tender opportunities, supply chain expectations and how seriously a company is seen to be taking its environmental responsibilities.

A workplace EV charger does not magically make a business perfect, but it is a visible step. It shows action, not just words. And in a world where every business says it wants to be greener, action is the bit that actually counts.

The Fleet Factor

For businesses running company vehicles, workplace charging becomes even more important.

An electric fleet only works properly when the charging setup works properly. If staff are relying heavily on public chargers, costs and downtime can become harder to manage. Vehicles may not be where they need to be, when they need to be there. Drivers may spend time charging when they should be working. And managers may end up with more questions than answers.

On-site charging gives businesses more control. Vehicles can charge overnight, during working hours, or between journeys depending on how the operation works. For companies planning to move vans, pool cars or company cars to electric, installing the right charging infrastructure early can make the transition much smoother.

Charterhall Energy’s own services focus on bringing together fleet electrification, EV charging, solar, battery storage and asset finance, helping businesses look at energy and vehicles as one joined-up strategy rather than separate problems.

Public Charging Is Growing, But Work Charging Still Matters

The UK’s public charging network is growing, which is good news for EV drivers. As of 1 January 2026, there were 87,796 public charging devices and 116,052 EV connectors across the UK.

That progress matters, but workplace charging still plays a different role. Public chargers are useful when people are travelling, visiting towns, using motorways or charging away from home. Workplace chargers are about routine. They support the daily pattern of people arriving, parking and working for several hours.

That makes them especially useful for offices, depots, warehouses, schools, local authorities, care homes, hospitality venues and commercial sites where vehicles are parked for long stretches of the day.

In other words, your car park might be doing more than just holding cars. It could become part of your energy strategy.

The Grant Support Is Worth Knowing About

There is also government support available for eligible workplaces. The Workplace Charging Scheme can cover up to 75% of the cost of purchasing and installing EV chargepoint sockets, capped at £500 per socket, with support available for up to 40 sockets across all sites per applicant. The current workplace grant funding is available until 31 March 2027.

That does not mean every business should rush in without planning. The right number of chargers, charging speed, electrical capacity and future fleet requirements all need to be considered properly. But it does mean businesses may be able to reduce the upfront cost of installation while support is available.

And let’s be real, if you are already thinking about workplace EV charging, checking available grant support is not just sensible. It is basic survival.

Where Solar and Battery Storage Come In

This is where workplace charging gets even more interesting.

EV chargers are great on their own, but they become even more powerful when they are part of a wider energy setup. For example, commercial solar panels can help a business generate electricity on-site, while battery storage can help store energy for use at better times.

That means a business could potentially use its roof, battery system and EV chargers together as part of one smarter energy plan. Solar generates electricity. Battery storage helps manage it. EV chargers use it. Suddenly, the site is not just consuming energy, it is managing it with a bit more intelligence.

Charterhall Energy highlights solar, battery storage, EV charging, power purchase agreements and asset finance as part of its commercial energy offering, which is exactly why workplace charging should not be treated as a standalone plug in the wall.

So, Perk or Investment?

The answer is both.

For employees, workplace EV charging can be a brilliant perk. It makes electric driving easier, more convenient and more practical.

For the business, it can be a proper investment. It supports fleet electrification, strengthens sustainability credentials, improves site infrastructure and helps prepare for a future where more vehicles will be electric.

The businesses that plan early will have a much easier time than those that wait until everyone suddenly needs charging at once. Because by that point, it is not a nice extra anymore. It is a queue in the car park and someone called Dave asking why charger number two is not working again.

Is Your Business Ready to Plug In?

Workplace EV charging is no longer just about keeping up appearances. It can support your people, your fleet, your customers and your long-term energy strategy.

Whether you are looking at staff charging, fleet charging, solar, battery storage or a full site-wide energy plan, Charterhall Energy can help you understand what your business actually needs before you make the investment.

Because the future of business energy is not just about using power. It is about using it smarter.
